ASUU strike can't be called off now The President of the  Academic Staff Union of Universities ( ASUU ) said on Friday said he  could not determine when it would call off its strike until when the members of the union met to decide the next course of action. The Federal Government and ASUU had, after a 14-hour meeting, which ended on Friday morning, said in a communiqué that ASUU would meet with its members and revert to the Federal Government within one week. The Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, who spoke to journalists by 3.30am on Friday, said government had also pledged itself to the contentious issues raised by the union, while the ASUU President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, on the other hand, said the union had useful deliberations and would consult its members and revert to the government.  Ogunyemi added, “Now, we have some concrete proposals to take back to our members as part of our consultations. BREAKING:- ASUU Finally Reaches Agreement With FG The Academic Staff Union of Universities ( ASUU ) says it has agreed to consider the federal government’s offer and suspend their strike. This great news comes after 12 hours, 30 minutes of a closed door meeting between ASUU and a government delegation in Abuja which started 1:38pm on Thursday, September 7 and ended 2:15 a.m. on Friday, September 8. According to Premium Times, the leadership of ASUU, however, said though it accepted the proposal presented by the government, it will take the proposal to its members and get back to the government in a week. The national president of ASUU, Biodun Ogunyemi, told journalists after the meeting that the union will come back after one week to take its final decisions. ASUU set to call off strike It’s a welcome development – Students, parents   Indications have emerged that the nationwide indefinite strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on August 13, which has entered its third week, may be called off this week. Already, stakeholders are apprehensive over the continued strike, and are asking questions about when normalcy will return to the ivory towers, having lost two weeks already. But, if the body language of the lecturers’ union is anything to go by, all hope seemed not to have been lost as to when the job boycott would be called off. ASUU had accused the Federal Government of failure to redeem the terms of agreement signed in 2009 and Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) endorsed by both parties in 2013, towards addressing the numerous challenges in the university sub-sector, including the poor welfare conditions and gross underfunding.
